Vents Magazine Interview

INTERVIEW: CHRIS LUKE

Artist Interviews

Chris Luke, welcome to VENTS! Can you tell us a little about your latest single, Love’s Big Machine?

Hello VENTS!

The song began with the cello motif from the verse and chorus and grew from there. The framework for the song went up fairly quickly, however, the melody and lyrics were a struggle and took some time.

Is there a story behind the single?

After abandoning multiple ideas for lyrics, things finally started to take shape after a startling moment of inspiration (or desperation) when the first verse appeared: “Life’s farewell is alive again, with tortured hearts and virtue’s end. Put voodoo back in poet’s eyes, thine flower wilts by cloudless skies.”

There’s such an eclectic mix of tones and textures; how did you pull it all together?

It wasn’t easy, believe me! But, little by little it continued to grow and grow from my many eclectic influences!

What inspired you to release your first original track on the airwaves in two decades?

There’s a saying by Abraham Maslow that goes:

”A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write, if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself. What a man can be, he must be.”

I’m just trying to be at peace with myself. It’s as simple as that.

Aside from other artists, what inspires you?

I’m inspired dailey by people, things and situations. And, the desire to always continue to learn about myself and everything around me.

You’ve been incredibly successful in your TV and film sync deals; which are you most proud of?

I’m most proud of the “Summer Storm” episode from the second season of “Beverly Hills 90210”. A pivotal scene in the episode was written around my song “I Don’t Get Much Sleep Anymore”. The scene highlighted the romance between the characters Brenda and Dylan and on 25 July 1991, “Summer Storm” aired, becoming the highest rated episode in the show’s short history.

How do you plan to follow on from the single?

The next single “They Come Looking for Me” will be released late spring, with quite a few more dropping at regular intervals thereafter.

Thank you for asking VENTS!

A&R Factory Spotlight Feature “Love’s Big Machine”

SPOTLIGHT FEATURE: CHRIS LUKE HAS MADE A SOULFULLY INTERSTELLAR RETURN TO THE AIRWAVES WITH HIS INDUSTRIAL COSMIC ROCK TRACK, LOVE’S BIG MACHINE

Posted on 20 March 2022

After getting sync deals in shows, such as Beverley Hills 90210 and McKenna, and contributing to the OST in the 2021 film, The Girl Who Believes in Miracles, Chris Luke has released his first original single in two decades, Love’s Big Machine.

After a snarling industrial rock intro that establishes the Nine Inch Nails influence right off the bat, Love’s Big Machine starts to veer into a vibey euphonic hit that crosses timelines with its psych-pop nuances, classic rock structure and rock opera styling. It’s as spacey as Bowie, as upraising as a Christian & Gospel release, and thanks to the sporadic industrial touches, it’s as visceral as the similarly titled Pretty Hate Machine.

The Cleveland Ohio-hailing artist has definitively mastered the art of allowing pure expressive soul to resonate as infectiously catchy anthemic energy. We can’t wait to hear what follows.

Love’s Big Machine pulses with raw energy and heart. Both cacophonous and subdued, the lyrics celebrate the endless tumble of life and love, exploring themes of connection and isolation, with love as the driving force at the center. Part soundscape, part alt-rock-epic, Love’s Big Machine blends beauty and chaos in a unique, radio-friendly rock anthem.”
